The Burial

he scoops shovelfuls of dirt

into a mound

as I watch

in agony,

unsure why I’m feeling

something other than relief

as the dulled metal edge

tumbles

quickly,

too quickly,

into the hole

before he replaces

the dirt

one shovel

at a time

until the worn glint

of the hatchet

fails beneath

so much earth.
