stretch

this poem doesn’t have to stretch to the end of a page

before it says everything I need to say,

it only has to reach you across the emptiness I cannot fathom,

connecting us for mere seconds

just long enough for me to say I love you,

just long enough for me to wait

for the echo of your whisper rippling back,

telling me fences can’t contain us.
